A Surprise Proposal in Sedona, Arizona | Emily & Hunter

Some proposals are planned down to every little detail. And then there are the ones where the person being proposed to has absolutely no idea what is coming.

Emily’s was definitely the second kind.

Hunter surprised Emily with a four-day weekend in Sedona, Arizona, and somehow managed to keep the biggest part of the trip completely under wraps. They had dinner plans that required them to dress up, but before dinner, Hunter suggested they make a quick stop at a lookout that some friends had recommended.

They were tourists, after all and had to see the view.

Except this particular stop had nothing to do with sightseeing.

The Surprise Proposal in Sedona

Hunter had planned to propose overlooking the red rocks of Sedona, and Emily was completely surprised.

Which made the whole thing even better.

After making their way to the lookout, Hunter asked Emily to marry him. And, of course, she said yes.

There’s something pretty incredible about proposing in Sedona. The red rock formations, desert landscape, winding trails, and wide-open views make it one of those places that already feels a little surreal. But for Emily and Hunter, this wasn’t simply a beautiful place they visited on vacation. It became the place where they got engaged.

And the best part?

Emily had no idea it was coming.

Celebrating Their Engagement in Sedona

I traveled from Florida to Sedona specifically to photograph Emily and Hunter, and I met them the following day while they were still celebrating their brand-new engagement.

We spent the day wandering around Sedona, exploring different trails and some of the gorgeous streets throughout town, stopping whenever we found a view that felt worth remembering.

This is one of my favorite things about photographing couples in a place like Sedona. You don’t have to force the experience into one location or spend the entire session standing in front of the same backdrop.

We explored, walked around and stopped for a view!

And we let the session feel like part of their trip rather than something completely separate from it.

Red Rocks, Trails & Their First Days as an Engaged Couple

We spent part of the session around Red Rock State Park, taking in the incredible scenery and finding different places to photograph them together.

Sedona is such a fun place for an engagement session because every direction seems to offer something different. The red rocks create those dramatic, unmistakably Arizona landscapes, while the trails and town give you opportunities for photographs that feel a little more relaxed and personal.

And because Emily and Hunter had only gotten engaged the night before, it was especially fun photographing them in that little window of time when everything is still newly engaged and processing the surprise.

The whole engagement is a celebration but the day after has all the extra jitters while they were celebrating and getting the chance to explore somewhere beautiful together, letting it all soak in.

Those are the kinds of things I love having photographs of. Not only what a couple looked like, but what this particular part of their story actually felt like.

A Sedona Engagement Session That Felt Like an Adventure

I don’t think an engagement session has to feel like a formal photoshoot from beginning to end.

Especially somewhere like Sedona.

There are so many beautiful places to explore that I would much rather have you actually experience the place together. We’ll make photographs along the way, but you should still feel like you’re on an adventure with the person you’re marrying.

For Emily and Hunter, that meant wandering through Sedona, taking in the views, exploring the trails, and enjoying the fact that they had just started this new chapter together.

And after traveling from Florida specifically for their session, I was so glad I got to be there to document it.

Their proposal happened the night before and their engagement session happened the next day! And suddenly, their four-day Sedona getaway had become the beginning of a much bigger story.
